For GCSE students, I would typically look at specific topics to ensure they understand everything. I will make specific PowerPoints to help students develop a full understanding, and after this move onto past exam questions for practice. When it is close to mocks or exams, I would go through past papers, urging students to have a go at each question on their own, but help prompt them if they find it difficult. For primary or 11+ students, I would use a similar structure, focusing on understanding and fluency in all topics before starting to do practice questions. I aim to have a split in each lesson, beginning with 10-15 minutes of recap from the previous lesson to consolidate all knowledge. Then after this I would go through a PowerPoint and teach them the topic they have requested. Towards the end of the lesson, given that they have understood, I would work through some practice questions with the student. Once we have covered all topics in the specification, I will focus on doing past papers, particularly for GCSE as this is the best way to practice. I will track the students progress, and highlight key areas of difficulty, so that I can specifically highlight and go through weaknesses allowing for improvement in these areas before the exam. If a student finds that they are behind at school, I focus on catching up on all previous topics close to exams, while focusing on current information to ensure they do not fall further behind. I also set some short homework tasks specific to what we have learnt in lesson for students to do throughout the week to consolidate knowledge and to be ready for recall at the start of each lesson. I offer an hour lessons typically as I believe no longer is necessary for GCSE or 11+, however I can also provide 1.5hour lessons if necessary upon request.
