I underwent a teacher training course specifically designed to learn about helping to teach SEN students. I gained both the knowledge and skills needed to assist any child in their education, and used these skills when placed in a school as part of the course.

I motivated and encouraged the students in a my assigned classroom by trying to make the lessons a bit more enjoyable, and speaking to them in a way that would that would give them a bit more confidence in answering questions, or just giving suggestions. Making myself look approachable to the students let them ask me more questions and for more assistance.
Furthermore, I was also assigned 3 children that I would take out of the classroom for reading sessions in the schools library, in which I would let them read paragraphs and chapters, but softly guide them if they got stuck with words.
After the reading sessions, I'd try to get the students to express their thoughts and feelings about what they had just read. We would discuss the story itself, but also go over any difficult words, and finding the meaning of those words. I tend to do this after the reading session, so not to break the flow of reading by having a discussion mid-way.

Beyond this teaching course, I have had experience in tutoring KS3 level students through exam periods. Going through exercise books alongside their own school books, and having practice papers to work on allowed these students to further their knowledge of these subjects. I also helped to teach them ways that they could study on their own, as I believed as an older student, they needed to have the skills to work independently and develop some more self discipline.
