I used to work in a Kumon in West Drayton which I feel significantly improved my ability to work with children.

I would expect students to come with me with a specific topic that they find confusing or difficult and step-by-step guide them through the process of understanding with many examples and analogies. I would also make sure to go through the specification point with them - this is key for all types of exams!

I believe the best way to make sure the student is proactive and engaging is to repeatedly ask questions during the tutoring session and asking questions especially in the event of clearing any doubts that they may be retaining.

I have found from my own tutee experiences that learning from a pre-prepared presentation slide is not always the most effective to learning all the content. With my students, I would use a clean whiteboard and throughout the lesson build on to the information and keep adding to the whiteboard so that by the end of the lesson, we have a full, self created whiteboard ‘blurt‘ or ‘mindmap’. This helps the students to engage in the learning a great deal too, compared to just reading off of a regular power point slide.

If i believe that the student needs more practise on a key topic or specification point, I will provide them with some practise questions to do for homework which they can send to me next lesson. Otherwise, I will be choosing to keep homework to a minimal as I am aware that students will have other commitments and school work to be getting on with.
