I found myself living in London several years ago and I decided to work asa volunteer with a refugee organisation.
The work involved integrating refugees from war torn countries and helping to enable the student refugees to learn basic communication,. through simple classroom work with a tutor. to learn about the U.K and also the culture .

I found myself immersed in the work ,and it was very good to watch people start to learn and be able after a few months to learn to speak in English and also learn to read in was reassuring to receive positive feedback from the work I was assigned to participate on.

I felt very confident that as a tutor I was getting such good results. It was very good to know that the tudents could achievresult quickly.
I was pleased to make a positive impact on the lives of some refugees who were coming through the system.
I find that it is easier if students have short regular lessons rather than long weekly lessons.
I often use magazines and simple books to learn basic grammar and to discover reading skills.
I like to ask the students to read to me and then I can read with the student.
This slowly teaches the student to read out loud and to pronounce the words correctly.
As the student progresses and they become more confident I start to use more structure learning methods to explain the grammar and how it is used.
I hope the students are happy to learn.
