With over a decade of teaching and tutoring experience in both Higher and Foundation GCSE Maths, my lessons are carefully structured to build and extend knowledge in a logical, progressive sequence. I understand how mathematical concepts connect and develop over time, and I design my lessons to ensure that each topic reinforces and builds upon prior understanding, setting a strong foundation for future learning.

Each lesson typically begins with 5–10 quick recall questions. These are designed to sharpen fluency, reinforce key skills, and identify any gaps that need immediate attention. This warm-up helps activate prior knowledge and gets students thinking mathematically from the start.

I use clear modelling supported by visuals and animations to bring abstract concepts to life. By moving from the abstract to the concrete, I help students develop deep conceptual understanding, not just procedural knowledge. Lessons are interactive and dynamic, with regular questioning and checks for understanding to keep students engaged and ensure misconceptions are addressed early.

Once concepts are understood, students move into independent practice, where I support with immediate feedback and marking. To consolidate learning, I use exam-style questions to develop familiarity with assessment formats and build confidence in applying knowledge under exam conditions.

As a current examiner for both GCSE Maths and Further Maths papers, I also train students in effective exam techniques, helping them maximise marks through strategic approaches to different question types.

For students who are ready for more challenge, I incorporate extension activities that connect the current topic to other areas of mathematics. This not only stretches their thinking but also fosters true mastery by revealing the broader mathematical landscape.

Above all, my goal is to make every lesson purposeful, supportive, and intellectually rewarding, so students leave with greater confidence and a deeper understanding of maths.

Susan has a good range of teaching methods and adapts these methods based off of the academic ability of the child. My children have progressed rapidly and I would thoroughly recommend Susan.

My daughters had 2 tutors for maths- one for primary and one for secondary. All I can say is that Susan is so so good at what she does. I notice the difference in professionalism and knowledge between the two tutors. My daughter has always looked forward to her tuition time, telling me that Susan ‘describes everything so simply better than my school teacher that is always rushed in lessons and doesn’t see to everyone’ I’ve seen huge improvements in my daughters confidence in maths and she’s jumped 2 grades which is just incredible! I have already recommended Susan to my neighbour for his children in secondary school and will have no issues recommending her to other people. My daughter and I are very thankful for Susan’s time and efforts for maths tuition.
