I believe in an immersive, conversational approach, but I am a strong believer in traditional grammar-focussed teaching too. Essentially, I believe it is good to be able to explain what is happening in a sentence as you form it. Though sadly no longer fashionable in schools, this method is used at top language universities and I have seen first hand the benefits it conveys to learners - and how much learners who haven't been taught grammatical concepts properly struggle to learn languages at a high level.
Talking is central to my lessons. My teaching background is in schools with very few resources, where lessons are mainly made up of talking and playing rather than sitting still and filling in worksheets. I want students to make the most of one-on-one teaching while having fun and connecting as human beings. We will alternate tightening up grammatical knowledge and acquiring useful vocabulary in a curriculum tailored to the student's particular educational needs.
I am friendly and fun, and I teach in a non-judgemental manner. I aim to meet students where they are and to move both of us towards communicating openly about their 'weaknesses' without shame or discomfort.
If desired, I will set a small piece of homework every session.
