I believe that the idea, is to have an idea. In other words: to use creative thinking and execution to solve business problems.
I treat students the same way i would treat a junior creative. By setting real world client briefs and then reviewing your initial conceptual / creative strategy response before getting you to develop executions using scamps/ storyboards/ scripts with or without the use of an Apple Mac/ Adobe.
All the while I will mentor and coach you on how to create and effective response.
This then feeds into your final presentation to 'the client' along with your creative rationale as to why your response is the right solution to the initial brief.
These skills are vital if you wish to succeed in becoming an effective and award winning creative.
