Lesson Format, Content & Teaching Methods

My lessons are friendly, interactive and tailored to each child’s individual needs, interests and learning style. I believe children learn best when they are actively involved, encouraged to ask questions and given the confidence to make mistakes and try again.

I usually begin a lesson with a short conversation or activity to recap previous learning and identify what the child already understands. We then introduce the new topic in a simple, age-appropriate way, breaking concepts into manageable steps. I use examples, stories, pictures, real-life situations, games, quizzes and practical activities wherever appropriate to make learning memorable and enjoyable.

The main part of the lesson focuses on guided practice, where I work through examples with the child before gradually encouraging them to solve problems independently. I regularly check understanding through questions and discussion rather than relying only on written work.

For Maths, I focus on developing strong foundations, problem-solving skills and confidence with numbers. For English, lessons can include reading, comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and creative writing. For Science, I encourage children to explore ideas through questioning, observation and simple experiments or demonstrations where possible.

I adapt the pace and difficulty according to the child. If a concept needs more practice, we take our time; if the child is ready for a challenge, I introduce extension activities.

I finish lessons with a brief recap of what we have learned and, where appropriate, a small activity or task to reinforce learning. My aim is for every child to finish a lesson feeling “I can do this!”
