Shelby Mendillo

Welcome! My name is Shelby Mendillo and I was an English teacher in Connecticut (United States) for five years. I earned my two Bachelor’s Degrees in English and in Secondary Education from Southern Connecticut State University in 2018.

My philosophy of education is one that is student-centered. I like for students to learn the technique of being natural inquisitors, and leaning inwards to practice the skills of resiliency and a growth mindset. Tutoring, to me, is more like one-on-one coaching in which I am able to facilitate the student's learning process.

Previously, I was an Interdepartmental Professional Learning Facilitator, Curriculum Writer and Developer, and Director of the Writing Center, so I like to bring my passions for writing, teamwork, and leadership together during my lessons. I have also been trusted to design a DEI audit for my team to ensure equitable texts; some of these projects included exploring how to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline and decolonizing the Eurocentric curriculum in American academia.

My students find that my lessons are fun, educational, and engaging. My goal is for students to leave my sessions feeling more confident in their reading and writing abilities.
