Sharon Jones

With over 25 years’ experience working with and teaching children, young people and adults, I offer supportive, personalised tutoring designed around the individual learner. I work with learners aged 16–19 and adults across a range of subjects, with particular expertise in the social sciences. I also provide training and professional development for professionals and lifelong learners.

My approach is based on one simple principle: there is a person behind every learner. Before focusing solely on the subject, I take the time to understand how you learn, what motivates you, where you feel confident and where you may be experiencing barriers. This enables me to tailor sessions to your individual needs, goals and learning style rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. I work collaboratively with my learners. I aim to stay one step ahead, anticipating challenges, identifying areas that may need further development and helping you to problem-solve rather than simply providing answers. Where learners lack confidence, have previously struggled with education or feel overwhelmed by a subject, I work patiently to break down those barriers and build confidence alongside knowledge and skills.

My academic and professional experience provides a strong foundation for my teaching. I hold a PhD in Sociology of Education, I am a qualified teacher, an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) and a Youth Mental Health First Aider. I have published academically and currently work in Access education within a further education college. Alongside my teaching, I have established a learning and development business offering CPD-accredited programmes for professionals and lifelong learning opportunities for individuals.

My experience also includes mentoring learners at different stages of their educational journeys. I have mentored A-level students and currently mentor a PGCE student, giving me insight into both the learner and aspiring-teacher perspectives. Whether you are preparing for exams, developing academic skills, returning to education, studying the social sciences, preparing for higher education or seeking professional development, I aim to provide a learning experience that is structured, encouraging, challenging and genuinely tailored to you. My goal is not simply to help you complete your course or pass an assessment, but to help you become a more confident, independent and capable learner.
