Samirah Sartor

I have experience as an English and writing tutor at a writing center, focused on helping students become better writers in their essays and reports. I also have experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), giving me further experience in working with students in relation to their writing and their understanding of English. As a GTA, I helped students understand/interpret reading and paper assignments, so that they feel comfortable tackling essays and reading complex literature and articles. I reviewed online discussions and helped students develop a style of reply. I also eased into role of discussion participant and eventually moderator/leader, so that students can learn how to hold a group discussion. I served as a writing tutor, with students coming to me first in order to gain input on the progress of their writing assignments, and helping them graduate into a more academic form of writing that was not needed in high school. I also taught students how to cite, how to avoid plagiarism, all that is important to academic writing and writers. I provided library research help whenever necessary as the library databases could be very complex and difficult for students to navigate and understand. I also led small group discussions for discrete periods of time to discuss the day's reading. All of my experiences have led me to be a suitable tutor because I know what professors and teachers are looking for in their students, and know that they need someone closer to them in age who can understand them, and their struggles.
