I am a qualified educator with a PGCE in Secondary Education and extensive experience as a professional musician, performing regularly as both a pianist and baritone. My background combines a solid foundation in music theory, from Bach chorales and Palestrina’s species counterpoint to musical theatre and jazz, with practical experience in live performance and ensemble work.
I have a particular specialism in composition, an area where many students often feel challenged. I have majored in composition, including film composition with orchestral scoring, and my own works have been performed live with choirs and ensembles. This means I can provide practical, real-world guidance on creating and developing music, from initial ideas right through to performance-ready pieces.
As a tutor, I aim to make every lesson engaging, well-structured, and tailored to each student’s needs. I usually start with a short recap or a discussion of any homework or tasks set previously, to ensure continuity and steady progress. For coursework-focused lessons, I’m happy to provide guided support, including screen sharing and practical demonstrations at the piano using my own examples.
My teaching approach focuses on analysis, understanding, and the confident use of key musical terminology. I encourage active participation, checking understanding along the way, and helping students develop strong conceptual foundations alongside their performance skills.
