The first session is about getting to know your child, their strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes to help me tailor each session afterwards to their individual needs and interests. This isn’t a classroom, we can really focus our content and introduce concepts in a new way.
I use a variety of methods to suit each individual child, following the national curriculum as a guide to ensure alignment. I may use some power point slides at the beginning to introduce concepts but primarily will be dynamic and engaging, using real world examples specific to each child to help solidify understanding.
Every child is different, has different strengths and weaknesses, and learns via different methods. I use positive reinforcement to build the child’s confidence in a weak area. I’ll make a quiet note of difficult topics to come back to at a lower level and build up, whilst loudly and proudly celebrating strong topics. This switches the focus from what they can’t do to what they can, whilst still addressing those difficult topics.
Most importantly, we have fun in our sessions! In doing so, this subject that once seemed so daunting and scary, becomes fun, engaging and memorable. Their confidence grows and they are able to approach difficult questions with a new problem solving mindset.
In my experience, neurodivergent children are much more likely to struggle in a busy classroom environment, causing them to “fall behind” their peers. When actually, given the time and right environment set up, they can match or even exceed the working levels of their peers.
