I've been a full time maths tutor for over 15 years and have taught over 15000 lessons. I previously taught maths at secondary school level and have been the lead maths teacher at a language school teaching maths to students studying an A-level equivalent foundation course. I'm happy to structure my tutoring sessions in whatever way the student prefers. I'm not at all fixed in the way I do things and will develop a different method with each student. Ideally this will involve as much input from the student as possible. The older the student the more I try to encourage them to let me know what they want to cover and to take responsibility for their own learning. Obviously this varies between students and I'm happy to give as much advice and guidance as is required. I'm happy to work through questions provided by the student or to provide questions for us to work through. Sometimes it's appropriate to teach a topic from the beginning and sometimes a student just needs some practice on a topic that they already mostly understand. As well as teaching maths in my sessions I also aim to teach students how to learn. This means that throughout my lessons I always try to show students the thought processes that they can use to help remember techniques and solve problems. As far as possible I try never to tell a student the answer to something if it's possible to point them in the right direction so that they can answer the question for themselves. I am happy to set homework after each session to help reinforce what we have covered.
