My lessons are, first and foremost, dictated by the needs of pupils and their aspirations. The value of tutoring is the teaching can be tailored precisely to the learner .

Session may include; games, puzzles, confidence building, routine drills, retrieval quizzes, tasks aligned with learner's likes, or problem solving, but most likely a mix of all these. For pupils preparing for exams there will typically be a heavy content of independent practice on exam style tasks.

I foster a high challenge, low stakes culture where effort and thought are valued above all else, and mistakes are safely used as learning opportunities. I have a lot of knowledge of current cognitive thinking which I apply in my teaching; in particular cognitive load, metacognition and memory retention strategies.

I like sessions to be fun but productive. I value active learning where pupil is engaged with the learning and independently practising new learning and applying it to new contexts.

For pupils preparing for exams I will include a strong focus on targeted exam style tasks.

Homework will be offered to pupils who want it and there is benefit for it; this provides excellent opportunities for independent practice which massively helps retention of knowledge (not forgetting).
