About me

My lessons are aimed at secondary school or college students across the UK, working towards qualifications such as GCSE, A-level, National 5, and Higher. I have three years' experience in online tutoring ages 11-18, and a creative approach to communicating. I focus both on carefully tailored exam preparation, and inspiring general motivation and confidence in students.

My lessons are typically 1 hour, allowing time for a flow of personalised activities. Each lesson is normally built around a specific topic that the student feels less confident in, and broken down into sections to seem more achievable. We will cover content in whatever way helps the student learn best (mind maps, quizzes, etc) using lots of visual aids on an interactive whiteboard. I endeavour to create a calm, personalised environment in which the student feels they can make mistakes and ask questions. I often relate concepts or analogies to topics in the wider world that the student is interested in, and use my degree expertise to show the relevance of biology to everyday life.

I place emphasis on key steps, words or phrases that commonly come up in mark schemes, and tips to best prepare for each exam. The student self-assesses their confidence before and after every subtopic, and I usually consolidate understanding with exam practice and self-marking with mark schemes.

Hopefully, by the end of my lessons, students find exam papers less scary and have gained appreciation for biology and the natural world - or at least dislike it a little less strongly than before! I think setting achievable goals, and working in a relaxing environment where the student knows they are the focus, is key to enhancing understanding and motivation for learning.
