With a strong academic foundation from The Courtauld Institute of Art and current doctoral research at The University of Edinburgh, I offer art history tutoring centred on close visual analysis and the development of independent critical thinking. My teaching approach encourages students to look slowly and attentively at works of art, learning how composition, colour, gesture, iconography, materiality, and historical context interact to produce meaning. Rather than relying primarily on memorisation, lessons are structured around the careful observation of images and the articulation of visual evidence in both discussion and writing.
Specialising in early modern and modern art, with particular expertise in seventeenth-century painting and the relationship between art and literature, I help students build confidence in analysing artworks across periods and media. My experience includes teaching assistance for A-Level History of Art, curatorial practice, public programming at Tate, and academic research presented internationally.
Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, whether preparing for A-Level or university applications, developing essay-writing skills, or cultivating a deeper understanding of visual culture. Emphasis is placed on developing a precise visual vocabulary, constructing persuasive arguments from observation, and making connections between artworks, ideas, and historical contexts. The aim is to foster not only academic excellence, but also a lasting confidence in looking at and thinking about art.
Students are encouraged to engage actively with artworks through dialogue, comparison, and sustained visual enquiry, enabling them to refine their interpretative skills while developing intellectual curiosity, analytical rigour, and confidence in expressing original ideas about art and visual culture.
