My experience of being a tutor is a mixture of being personable enough that the student feels comfortable, while also really helping them to apply themselves. It's good if after every session they feel they can come away with something, something that they didn't know before. Also, I feel it's invaluable to their progression that we speak in French as much as possible and that I let them try and figure things out for themselves, rather than spoonfeed everything. I learnt things though practice and dedication and that's why I've managed to retain a lot of things. A good way of working is letting the student tell me what they need, working through anything they want and then seeing if I can suggest anything. Picking up from where we left off in the previous session and having a little recap is also a good way of testing one's memory, to see what has been retained. And lastly, making learning an enjoyable experience!
