I focus on tailoring my lessons to students individual needs and desires. The structure will be based around the students style of learning, aiming to maximise the students engagement and output.
Typically, I will first discuss the fundamentals of a topic that the student has identified as being weak or needing improvement. This allows me to understand their prior knowledge so I can adapt the exercises in my controlled practice section. During this stage, you are encouraged to do the maths, as it is a common saying that ‘maths is not a spectators sport’! Drilling a concept through repetition helps a student feel more comfortable in an exam as the questions look more familiar.
Once both me and my student are happy that their understanding of this topic is good, we will move on. However, I find it good practise to quickly revisit a topic each month. Quickly having a go at a previous question will help reinstall it in their long term memory, or if there’s an issue, it will pinpoint this so we can do more work on it.
From my experience with students of varying academic abilities, I am confident that I can provide you with a structured and successful approach to reaching your goals in mathematics!
