I like to have a chat with the student and understand their strengths and weaknesses before curating a structured plan that helps weaker areas whilst reinforcing strengths. Lessons are not meant to be scary or dreaded and so I always try to stay lighthearted and positive! I love using past papers to test knowledge as well as quick fire questions using resources such as flashcards. Repetition is super important when learning however I try to keep the content fresh or at least deliver it in a new way that may help the student understand better. I have taught swimming and have learnt many valuable lessons about different ways that people learn and have found it easier to spot different learning styles and adapt my lessons and teaching to accommodate those students. The most important thing for me is that the student feels like they have a say in how the lessons are taught and what content they would like to cover! This helps build trust so when the difficult topics come up, the student feels like they are able to tackle it and aren’t afraid to ask questions. I loved geography at school and have a real passion for the subject, so by tutoring this is allowing me to share my passion with others and hopefully fostering that passion in them. I would love it if everyone could also join the dark side and be a physical geographer! However that is unlikely, but maybe you could convince me that human geography is better…
