I have 30 years plus experience teaching Geography to a variety of abilities from those needing a pass to Oxbridge potential. I have taught AQA, OCR and EDEXCEL at both GCSE and A level. I would ensure the content of the lessons match exactly with spec that is being taught. This is important because there are differences between different specs in the content, layout of exams and the emphasis of the questions. To some degree the detailed content will be determined by the needs of the student, which are discovered by getting to know them. I would tend to use the same case studies as taught by the school so as to avoid confusion but ensuring the knowledge will allow the student to answer the exam questions as fully as possible. In each lesson I would cover Geographical skills, subject knowledge and exam techniques including those I have gained as a GCSE Examiner. The Geographical skills I would cover include the writing up of the fieldwork assignments as well as answering the exam questions on fieldwork. I would provide resources for the student so they can review the lessons as part of exam preparation. The timing of lessons, as far as possible, would be organised to fit in with the student's other responsibilities and obligations. Students must understand their cooperation is needed for success. Ultimately my aim would be to increase a student's confidence and hopefully their comfort with Geography, as these tend to lead to the greatest improvement in achievement.
