Connection between student and tutor are paramount. I believe that lessons shouldn’t be dull or repetitive but engaging in order for students to learn.
A standard lesson will start with myself presenting the core material for the session.
I empower my students to take the lead, with myself steering the session without dominating it, maintaining the balance of offering direction while allowing student autonomy.
Summarisation and reflection of the lesson and the students work are important for a students long term goals and objectives. What did the student learn? What are the key takeaways? What did they find difficult?
Before a session is complete I will always preview the next session to give a student an idea of what to expect and how it builds on the day’s material. Here I can distribute any necessary materials for upcoming sessions and remind the student of the key points that we have covered in the day’s session.
Finally I will leave the last section of the session for the student to ask questions and give the student time for self reflection. What worked well? What was challenging? What could be improved? These reflections not only help the student but also help myself to identify potential stumbling blocks that may need to be addressed. These reflections will transcend to all the positive work and learning the student had achieved in the session.
