The emphasis is both on finding a sense of stability and ease in the transitions from pose to pose and on building strength and focus through longer holds.
My Yin Yoga classes are focuses on seated and reclines asanas (postures) that are held for longer periods of time. Yin Yoga poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body—the tendons, fasciae, and ligaments—with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility. While holding poses I encourage students to observe sensations, the flow of the breath, and thoughts as they arise which emphasises the more meditative aspects of the practice.
As well as improving flexibility, Yin yoga can help release stress, alleviate anxiety, and provides a fantastic compliment to more 'yang' forms of physical exercise.
