I'm native English, advanced Spanish, upper-intermediate Portuguese.
An old teacher of mine used to always end their classes with "...and remember, practise practise!"
It seemed so obvious as to be a bit silly, but over the years I have come to realise that he was spot on. Those who practise regularly improve and those who don't, don't. After almost a decade living in a country where the average working age person wants/needs to speak English but can't speak English, I've realised that this simple 'practise practise' truth tends to be crux of the problem for most people.
My teaching philosophy is therefore a blend of 'coach-teacher', where a teacher imparts knowledge, and a coach facilitates practice. My classes are focused on the individual (or small group), where everyone will have their own ideal learning and practice dynamic and routine. Spoken languages are spoken, so for B1+ students speaking practice should be prioritised, supported by listening, reading, and writing practice.
