My online history lessons will mirror the structure of a traditional classroom, but with an even stronger emphasis on discussion and critical thinking. To truly understand a historical topic, students must engage with it — asking questions such as: What is this topic about? Why is it important to study? How does it connect to our lives today? These conversations help bring history to life and encourage students to think beyond memorizing facts.
Once students have built a solid foundation of knowledge, the focus will shift to applying that understanding. We will explore how to use historical knowledge to support arguments in essays, and how to analyze primary and secondary sources effectively.
A key part of my approach will also involve evaluating bias and perspective. Students will learn to ask: Is this source biased? If so, how does that affect its reliability — and can it still provide valuable insight? By combining knowledge, discussion, and analysis, my lessons aim to develop both historical understanding and the critical thinking skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
