Teaching Chemistry and other science courses physics and biology for 20 years, I implement how to set up your show work to identify the known and unknown variables in a problem. The next step is to determine the best formula or alternative approach for the solution.
The use of real life examples is used to make abstract concepts identifiable and understandable.
For example, balancing chemical equations and Stoichiometry have been challenging topics for students. I have developed easy ways of analyzing the situation and using a rational approach to understand how to determine an unknown without going through the robotic steps that need to be memorized without understanding the reasoning behind the use of the approach.
I demonstrate examples and then give students the opportunity to show they understand.
Usually at the end of a one hour lesson, my actual in class students grasp new concepts. More abstract concepts need to be reviewed which can be done by practice and feedback during the learning session.
