For me music is a deeply personal craft, and my philosophy is to help each student discover their own musical voice. No two learners are the same, so I adapt my teaching style to suit different personalities—some prefer structured progression, while others flourish through creative exploration and improvisation. Therefore, we begin by identifying your musical goals—whether you want to progress through graded exams, learn to play specific pieces, develop improvisational skills, or pursue any other musical ambition. From there, I tailor each lesson to help you master key areas such as:
Scales and technique
Sight-reading
Improvisation
Music theory
Musicality and expressive playing
Effective practice strategies
Keyboard “geography” and note fluency
Artistic flourishes and stylistic playing
Lesson Structure
The exact structure varies between students, but a typical lesson might look like this:
A warm-up of scales and technical exercises for finger dexterity
A short mental warm-up focusing on theory or note recognition
Work on a core skill (e.g., sight-reading, theory, improvisation)
Development of a piece to practice outside lessons and build long-term musical ability
I have taught students aged 7 to 66 over the past year while also performing as a classical pianist. My students often describe me as approachable, patient, and encouraging. I aim to keep lessons engaging for younger learners and suitably challenging for those who want to push further. I also support my more advanced students throughout the week if they have questions between lessons.
