In the introductory lesson I will aim to get to know what the student's aims are and gauge their level of mathematics so I can better tailor the teaching to them from then on.
My aim is the improve the confidence of students in maths, build more resilient problem solvers and better the maths ability of my students but also do it in a way which does not alienate maths into something that is hard and abstract and rather transform it into a subject which students are curious and passionate about.
I will teach students via the EDIP (explain, demonstrate, imitate and practice) principle. First by explaining the topic and the theory, then demonstrate it myself in an example. Then the student will be asked to "imitate" which will be a guided practice of questions in that topic where I can correct any misunderstandings or if happy then can move onto practice, which can either be done in lesson or outside.
If the student wishes to go over certain topics or questions they can bring them on the day or inform me before the lesson so I can prepare suitable teaching material.
I encourage all students to ask about anything whether it is something that has come up outside of learning which they are unsure of or during a lesson, and if they wish to send me questions they are unsure of prior to a lesson so I am able to prepare and give out prepared guidance without wasting time during the lesson.
