Commonly during private lessons, I would ask my students to bring work they had been struggling with so that we could focus directly on the areas they found most challenging. We would then work through the tasks together, allowing me to understand how they learned most effectively and which teaching methods suited them best.
After this, I would set my students a related task to complete as homework. This could involve reading further into a topic or completing exercises from an online resource connected to the material covered during the lesson. In the following session, we would review the homework together to assess how well they had understood and applied the topic independently.
I would also adapt my teaching style depending on each student’s confidence level and ability. Some students benefited more from visual explanations and worked examples, while others responded better to guided problem solving and repeated practice questions. I found that creating a supportive learning environment was particularly important, as many students initially lacked confidence in subjects they found difficult. By encouraging them to explain their reasoning out loud, I was able to identify misunderstandings and help them develop stronger analytical and problem-solving skills.
Over time, this approach helped students become more independent learners, as they grew more comfortable applying the methods we had practised without relying heavily on guidance. I also ensured that previous topics were regularly revisited so that knowledge was reinforced rather than forgotten between sessions. This consistent structure of explanation, practice, feedback, and review allowed students to clearly monitor their progress while improving both their understanding of the subject and their overall academic confidence.
