I am a practising painter and qualified teacher with twenty years' experience of teaching art, from complete beginners to students preparing for art school. I hold an MFA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths and an MA in Cultural and Critical Theory, and I continue to exhibit my work in France and internationally.
For nine years I taught drawing on the foundation course at the London College of Fashion, helping students develop sketchbooks and portfolios for degree applications. I was also lead tutor on its drawing and illustration summer school, and the course I wrote for it became an accredited qualification. I have been Head of Art at a sixth-form college in London and have taught at South Hampstead High School and Highgate School. Many of my students have gained places at their first-choice art schools.
Every lesson is tailored to you. In a first session we talk about what you would like to achieve and look at any work you have already made. From there, lessons usually combine a practical exercise, such as drawing from observation, working with colour or trying a new material, with looking at artists whose work relates to what you are doing. I give clear, honest and encouraging feedback, and suggest small tasks to try between lessons so you keep moving forward.
I can help with GCSE and A level coursework, sketchbooks, written contextual studies and art school portfolios, as well as adults who want to start again or develop their own practice.
Lessons take place online. All you need is your materials and a camera pointed at your work.
