As mentioned I mentored in school as part of the maths mentoring programme. I volunteered every lunchtime once a week to help a yr 10 girl with her upcoming mocks. I would ask the student what they want to learn so I'm aware of what topic they struggle with, and then I would first go over an example with them and so them my method on how I would approach that question. Then I would let them complete a question in a similar format, giving guidance if needed. After I would show them how to do a harder question and let them complete a similar one in the same manner. Finally I would finish off by letting them complete some exam style questions by themselves near the end of the lesson. I think this would be most effective because I believe maths is all about practicing and if you don't understand you can read notes or watch a video on what to do, then try the question yourself.
