I've been a bass teacher for over 20 years and can help you develop your double bass playing skills.

My lessons combine personal experience with clear and practical guidance to get you playing double bass with others as soon as possible.

It doesn't matter if you've never picked up a bass before, play electric bass, or already play double bass – I can help you to start making music straight away. Lessons are suitable for all ages and abilities!

During lessons we'll cover everything you need to become a competent and confident bass player.

Techniques
Learn how to hold the bass, how to pluck the strings and finger notes. We'll build a solid foundation that's essential for a great sound.

Groove and timing
Learn how to lock in with banjo, guitar, fiddle, and drums — and actually drive the band.

Real-world bass lines
We'll study simple, effective patterns that work in jams, gigs, and sessions. I'll share lead sheets and play-along tracks to help you develop as a musician.

Bluegrass
Understand the basics of bluegrass, including drive, pulse, walking patterns, and how to survive fast tempos.

Folk & acoustic
Learn how to tastefully support singers and shape dynamics.

Blues & roots
Play classic patterns, including shuffles and grooves, learning how to make simple lines sound great.

Basic bow skills
Discover why playing with a bow is the best way to perfect intonation.

Performance skills
Discover what to play, when to play, and how to stop overthinking when jamming and gigging.

About Me

I'm currently the bass player with Old Baby Mackerel, and I also perform regularly with blues, jazz, folk, and function bands across the UK and Europe. I regularly play between 70–100 gigs a year.

I've been playing professionally for over 20 years. Earlier in my career, I played with the rock band Jebo, recording albums with producer John Burns and touring extensively across Europe, including performances at the Royal Albert Hall. We supported some incredible bands, including Yes, ASIA, the Australian Pink Floyd, The Musical Box, Budgie and Arthur Brown.

I previously taught bass at Access to Music, leading GNVQ-level bass courses and helping develop the next generation of musicians.

While I love the theory, my focus is always on solid groove, musicality, and helping players build confidence and enjoyment in their playing.

I continue to get lessons myself, and am developing my bow skills and learning the classical double bass repertoire.
