My aim as a history tutor would be to create an engaging, supportive and structured learning environment where students can develop their historical knowledge, analytical skills and confidence. I would tailor each lesson to the individual student's ability, exam board, specification and personal learning style, ensuring that lessons are both productive and enjoyable.

I would typically structure my lessons around a 60-minute session (with a 90-minute session available to accommodate those who may need breaks). Each lesson would begin with a short recap or retrieval activity to assess the student's understanding of previous topics. This would be followed by the main teaching section, where we would explore a particular historical event, individual, period or theme. I would then incorporate exam-style questions, source analysis or essay planning to help students apply their knowledge. Each lesson would finish with a summary of key points, feedback and a clear objective for the next session.

For GCSE students, I would focus on building a strong foundation of historical knowledge, developing chronological understanding and introducing effective exam techniques. For A-Level students, I would place greater emphasis on interpretation, historiography, source evaluation, causation, significance and developing sophisticated arguments.

Lessons would be interactive rather than purely lecture-based. I would encourage students to ask questions, debate historical interpretations and explain their reasoning. I would use resources such as timelines, mind maps, essay plans, historical sources and exam questions to accommodate different learning styles.

I would regularly assess progress through short quizzes, written responses and exam practice. I would provide constructive feedback, identifying both strengths and areas for improvement. I would also encourage students to become independent learners by developing revision strategies, essay structures and confidence in their own historical arguments.

Ultimately, I want my tutoring sessions to help students move beyond simply memorising historical facts. My goal is to equip them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to think critically, construct effective arguments and achieve their full potential in GCSE and A Level history.
