In teaching, I apply 4 As Format, which are Activity, Analysis, Abstraction, and Application. This format fosters deep understanding of the students, in which they are not only focusing on understanding the concepts taught, but also knowing where and when they can apply it in real-life settings.
For Activity, the goal is to evoke the students' interest in studying the concept. This includes games, brainstorming, simulations or role play related to the concept.
For Analysis, students are led to process information and to discover patterns of the concept by discussions and brainstorming analysis.
For Abstraction, key concepts are explained through interactive lectures, direct instruction, and creating mind maps to define concepts.
For Application, students are encouraged to apply learned knowledge in practical settings. It can be achieved through solving problems related to the concept and figuring out how to apply the concept in real-life situations.
By applying the 4 As Format, students are encouraged to be active participants and not just being passive listeners. Instead of focusing on concept memorization, students are encouraged to learn through analysis which forges deeper understanding. Also, students are trained to apply knowledge achieved to real-world scenarios that enhances practicality of the concept learnt. Last, but not least, this format can be implemented across different subjects and grade levels.
To add up, besides 4 As format, there will be question and evaluation session to help students improve in the area which they are confused or weak at. There will also be assignments given for the subjects taught to help the students exercise and sharpen their understanding and ability.
