My lessons are practical and conversation-driven. We spend most of the time actually using Chinese, not just studying it. I believe the best way to learn a language is to use it from day one, so even as a complete beginner, you'll be speaking and responding in Mandarin from your very first session.
Each lesson is tailored to your goals, but a typical session might include spoken Mandarin practice, real business scenarios (like drafting professional emails, preparing for meetings, or navigating negotiations), and discussion of how cultural differences shape communication in the workplace. That last part is something most Chinese tutors don't cover, and it's where I bring something genuinely different.
I spent years working between Chinese companies and their Western clients, acting as a bridge across both language and culture. That experience taught me that language is only half the challenge. The other half is understanding how business culture influences the way people communicate, including when to be direct, when to leave things unsaid, how to build trust with Chinese counterparts, and why a perfectly normal phrase in English can land completely differently in a Chinese professional context. Misunderstandings in cross-cultural business settings rarely come from vocabulary. Instead, they come from not knowing the unwritten rules. I teach those rules alongside the language itself.
For complete beginners, we start in English and gradually bring in more Mandarin as your confidence grows. I focus on getting you functional quickly, from vocabulary, phrases, and cultural know-how you can actually use at work.
Every session is adjusted based on where you are and what you need, so you're never stuck covering things you've already mastered or rushed past things that need more time.
Lessons are one-to-one, conducted online, and I adapt the pace entirely to you. Whether your goal is to hold a basic conversation, communicate more effectively with Chinese colleagues, or feel genuinely confident in a Chinese business environment, I'll build a learning plan around what matters most to you.
