I am largely a self-taught tutor who has developed my teaching style through independently leading discussion-based workshops. My experience with this approach began during my time studying media at college, where I discovered how valuable open conversation and collaborative thinking can be when exploring creative work. Rather than focusing on a lecture-style format, I prefer to guide discussions where participants feel comfortable sharing ideas, asking questions, and building interpretations together.
My teaching focuses on the relationship between art, interpretation, and history. I am particularly interested in how artists respond to major historical events and how their work can shape, challenge, or reinterpret the way those events are remembered. In my sessions, I encourage students to look at artworks not just as images or objects, but as expressions of personal perspective, political context, and cultural influence. By discussing the circumstances surrounding an artwork such as the time period, the artist’s background, and the social climate students begin to understand how meaning in art can shift and evolve over time.
A key part of my approach is balancing personal interpretation with thoughtful research. I encourage participants to explore their own reactions to artworks while also engaging with the historical and cultural context behind them. Through discussion and shared analysis, students can see how different viewpoints shape the way art is understood and how artistic responses to history can influence broader cultural narratives.
Ultimately, my goal is to create a supportive and engaging learning environment where people feel encouraged to think critically, share ideas openly, and develop their own perspectives. By focusing on dialogue and collaboration, I aim to help participants connect more deeply with art and the stories it tells about the world around us.
