I'm currently coming up on one year as a private tutor, I have tutored all sorts of personalities, ages and skill levels and change my teaching style to match each student. My first session will be used to gauge your understanding on your chosen subject and what topic areas you would mainly like to focus on. I will ask questions about your preferred learning style and cater to that whenever I can, but if something doesn't work for you or I feel another method may benefit you better, I wont be afraid to change and adapt as we go along and gain a better understanding of how you learn.
Generally, in a session we will use the first half to learn, you can ask questions whenever and help me to focus on the areas that really need it. We may use online resources or textbooks to help develop your understanding on a topic better. We will never rush into the next thing unless you feel ready, however I like to use the second half of my session for you to answer some past-paper questions without my help, and for the last 10 minutes we will go through your answers together, talk through all incorrect AND correct answers, making sure you understand WHY you got the answer right or wrong, so you can answer similar questions even in a different context. As a student, I found the best way to learn is to understand why something is the way it is, not just learning the right or wrong answer. I will sometimes act as your student and see if you can explain a topic back to me, as studies show one of the best ways to learn and retain information, is to teach it yourself.
