My lessons are focused on making sure the student genuinely understands a topic rather than simply memorising a method. I already have experience teaching myself, as I regularly break subjects down into smaller sections, identify what I do and do not understand, and then work through each part until I feel confident. I use this same approach when helping other people.
I like to begin by finding out what the student already knows, as there is no point spending a whole lesson explaining something they are already comfortable with. From there, I break the topic into a few manageable sections and explain each idea clearly, using examples where helpful. I then give the student opportunities to try questions themselves so I can see whether they have understood the method.
I am patient and happy to explain something in a different way if the first explanation does not make sense. I also encourage students to ask questions, including questions about things they think are obvious, because those questions can often reveal an important gap in understanding.
My own revision style involves looking at the individual branches of a topic and making concise notes for each one. I find this helps me see the bigger picture while also making sure I have not missed smaller areas that could be tested. I would use a similar structure in my lessons, adapting the pace and difficulty to each student's needs.
Overall, my lessons would be supportive, interactive and focused on building genuine understanding and confidence.
