Jessica Barnaby

I teach drawing and painting in a clear, structured and encouraging way, with a strong focus on helping students understand what they are doing rather than simply copying a finished result.

My background includes portraiture, pet portraits, still life and general drawing and painting, with experience in graphite, charcoal, watercolour, pastel, oil pastel and acrylic. I particularly enjoy helping students build confidence with observation, proportion, tone, colour, composition and the practical steps involved in creating realistic artwork.

My lessons are calm, friendly and tailored to the student’s level. We can work on foundations such as drawing accuracy, shading, perspective and colour mixing, or focus on a specific project such as a portrait, animal drawing, landscape, still life or school/college artwork. I explain techniques step by step, demonstrate where useful and give practical feedback so students know exactly what to improve and how to improve it.

I am especially suited to beginners, improvers and adults returning to art after a long break, as well as students who want patient, thoughtful support with developing their skills. My aim is to help each student become more confident, more observant and more independent in their work.

Lessons can be adapted to suit individual goals, whether that means building basic drawing skills, exploring different mediums, preparing for coursework, or simply enjoying regular creative practice with clear guidance.
