I have had previous experience in tutoring and this is what I have always done which seems to be very effective:
First lessons are always fun- I will introduce myself and we will get to know each other more.
After this I generally adapt and plan my lessons around the type of student I am tutoring; this way the student will enjoy the experience. All students are different some are audible learners, some are practical learners, and some are visual learners.
It is always good to start by reviewing the syllabus and following the outline. However, if a student wants to focus on a certain topic then I am all for that - that’s what I’m here for. To test the student’s understanding, I would prepare some assessments or short quizzes to incorporate active recall; not only will this help me to see where the student is at in terms of their understanding but also help the student to remember as active recall is considered a very useful study method. As the student begins to understand the subject more and more we can then move onto bigger tests or pass papers. This will allow the student to practice writing these long tests and gain confidence in writing them. Once the student has mastered the subject and has gained confidence in the particular subject then my work is done. My passion is to help students thrive as I can completely relate to the hardships of being a student and struggling to understand certain topics.
