I have been teaching and tutoring for about 23 years, in a wide variety of situations, with many nationalities and different ages. I have found the most effective approach is student centred, and often student led, so the student is learning what they want, engaged in learning through what they are interested in and is useful to them. This increases their motivation and enjoyment, and learning becomes fun! At the same time I understand that it can be useful to have a framework and is preferable for some students, so I am happy to use the most appropriate textbook for them and help them work through this. It all depends what the aim and focus is- if is reading and writing, we can use texts that are relevant and interesting for you, and I can set writing exercises; or we can talk through different topics, so you develop speaking and listening skills through actual practice and not just theory. At every step I will be there to support, encourage and guide you, observing what your particular needs are and how I can best help. I provide the benefit of a depth and breadth of knowledge and experience gained throughout my life as a native speaker and over the last decades of teaching practice, and can explain the unwritten 'rules' of English as well as teach the useful phrases that most British English speakers use, even if they don't understand why. By learning these, you will learn how to communicate better and more clearly, and become more and more fluent in the English language.
