I have experience tutoring online and in-person in a one-on-one setting. In these sessions, I enjoy personalising each lesson to ensure that each student feels fully supported. My approach is on of authentic collaboration with my students - together, we will address any learning barriers and work at the pace that best suits the student. For my role to be effective, I ask my students to guide me to the areas that they find most challenging. It is very important that there is an element of trust and honesty in my tutoring relationships where students feel comfortable to ask questions, make mistakes and try again. This is a team effort which, by the end of the sessions, will hopefully have built a firm foundation for students to feel confident and capable of tackling new and difficult content more independently. It is not just about understanding the English language - it is about students realising their own strengths and developing a growth mindset towards their education. I like to get an idea of the learning style of my students - visual, verbal, kinetic, etc - so I can incorporate learning activities that include styles that centralise their enjoyment in learning.
I taught in a South African high school for three and a half years and feel that this full-time teaching experience has shaped my own desire for teaching and learning to be a meaningful, liberating and empowering experience. I am a life-long learner myself, committed to high standards and constantly seeking new ways to learn and grow in my own educational journey.
