I tailor my tutoring in two ways: preparing for an upcoming test where we will focus on learning the question style, exam technique and how to approach problems; or looking at maths concepts in more depth from first principles to improve understanding and ability.
My lessons will revolve around an interactive whiteboard where I can teach new methods and concepts, and practice questions. I will also create worksheets for homework, which I will mark and feedback on every session.
I format my lessons around a topic or key concept. I usually start the lessons with warm up questions then focus on conceptual understanding, and locating strengths and areas to be improved. After this, we will have a go at some practice questions and different techniques to find the best fit for the student. At the end of the session we will focus on questions that require application and more complex problem solving before having a feedback session on what went well and what needs to be improved. I will also assign homework which I will mark and feedback on before the next session.
Fundamentally, I believe patience and outside thinking is required to not only improve the mathematic ability of my students, but instil confidence in their academic future.
