My lessons are structured around understanding first and problem-solving second. I usually begin by identifying what a student already understands, where the difficulty lies, and what they want to achieve from the session. From there, we work through the underlying physics step by step before applying it to worked examples and exam-style questions.

I try to make lessons interactive rather than simply talking through material. I will ask questions throughout, encourage students to explain their reasoning, and use their answers to judge where more explanation or practice is needed. If one explanation does not click, I am happy to approach the idea from a different angle. I also focus on helping students understand why equations work and when to use them, rather than relying on memorisation alone.

The exact content depends on the student. Sessions can focus on a particular topic, homework, exam preparation, mathematical techniques, problem-solving, or broader conceptual understanding. I can also help students develop a clearer method for setting out calculations and approaching unfamiliar questions.

My academic background includes an MPhys in Theoretical Physics from the University of St Andrews, covering areas such as mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, relativity, thermodynamics and particle physics. I also hold an MSc in Science Communication and Public Engagement.

Alongside my academic training, I have several years of professional experience explaining complex scientific ideas. I have written scripts for PBS Space Time and publish accessible physics articles through A Field Guide to Physics. That experience has taught me how to break difficult subjects into clear, manageable explanations without oversimplifying the science.

Most importantly, I want lessons to feel relaxed, collaborative and tailored to the student’s needs.
