Helping children become confident, capable readers and writers

Hello! I’m Janica, a qualified teacher in the UK with 4 years of experience as a classroom teacher and 4 years of further experience as a Phonics and SATs booster tutor.  I hold a PGCE from the University of Manchester and a First Class degree in English Literature and Linguistics from the University of York. I also have several years of experience working with children aged 3-14 in the context of the local church and summer camps. I aim to build a safe learning environment for all children. I have an enhanced DBS certificate, available upon request. 

I specialise in English with a focus on developing children's reading, comprehension, listening, vocabulary, grammar, and developing confident, purposeful writers. I am passionate about helping children build strong foundations, grow in confidence, and grow a genuine love of reading and writing.

My teaching is rooted in evidence-based practice. During my PGCE, I researched inclusive teaching strategies such as exploratory talk and formative assessment (all awarded distinctions), which I now apply to ensure lessons are effective and engaging. My lessons are structured, interactive, and tailored to each child. I use ongoing assessment and clear feedback to track progress, address gaps, and support measurable improvement while building independence. I also use a range of digital tools to ensure your child is engaged throughout the lesson! 

The first session includes a personalised English assessment, evaluating reading (fluency and comprehension) and writing (grammar, spelling, and vocabulary). You will receive clear written feedback outlining strengths, areas for development, and a tailored plan to support your child’s progress.
