Hi, I’m Iwan. I have a Master’s degree in Mathematics from Cardiff University and I tutor GCSE and A Level Maths and Further Maths. I went to a Welsh-medium school in Cardiff, so I can teach in English or Welsh, whichever you’re more comfortable with.
I work as a supply maths teacher and cover supervisor in secondary schools, teaching maths to different year groups, often at short notice. Before that I volunteered on a numeracy programme, tutoring younger students in maths. Between the two, I am very used to explaining the same idea several different ways until one makes sense.
Most schools in Cardiff use WJEC for both GCSE (Mathematics and Numeracy) and A Level Maths, so by default I work from the WJEC specification and past papers. Some independent schools and colleges use Edexcel, AQA or OCR instead. If yours does, let me know and I’ll use the right specification and papers for your course.
In the first lesson I’ll find out where you are. We’ll talk about which topics you find hard, and if you have any recent tests or homework, we’ll look through those together. After that, a typical lesson means going through a topic, working an example together, then you trying questions while I watch how you approach them. The working usually tells me more than the final answer, so I can spot where things are going wrong and fix it there.
Closer to exams, we’ll do more past paper questions under timed conditions and work on exam technique, like setting out your working so you pick up method marks even when the final answer isn’t right.
I can set a bit of practice between lessons if you want it, and I’m happy to keep parents updated on how things are going.
