In my lessons I usually ask what the student prefers and like to accommodate their learning style. I like to focus on developing fluency and conversational skills through natural discussions. By choosing a specific topic, the student is able to expand their vocabulary, learn new phrases and practice conversations in a given setting. I opt for a more informal presentation so that the student can feel comfortable and so that the lesson will mimic what a real life scenario might be like. I can provide vocabulary lists and idioms that might be useful, distinguish between formal and informal phrases, and teach common practices. In my experience, having a more 'formal' half where we go over grammar and vocabulary, followed by an informal conversation where the student can practice what we have spoken about, leads to the best results.
