Over the past 15 years, I have tutored a wide range of students from GCSE and A Level History to Primary School English Language. With all my students, the first lesson generally involves assessing this particular student’s areas of difficulty. The focus of the following lessons is targeted at helping this student familiarise him/herself with this challenge. Some examples of focus over the past 15 years include essay planning (especially for A Level History and English) and planning stories for creative writing (especially at primary school level). More recently, tutoring English as a Foreign Language has become one of my main roles. In many cases, my EFL students are older learners, which means that a different approach is required. These lessons will involve more conversation and pronunciation practice, along with technical language skills (e.g. sentence structure, correct use of verbs, nouns and adjectives and tenses).
