My experience as a current trainee commercial pilot, combined with my Honours degree in Engineering, makes me a suitable tutor for maths and physics. Over the years, I have tutored many students in both subjects with a high success rate.
I like to structure my lessons as follows, although I am flexible to a specific student's needs:
- I ask a student questions on their current understanding of a topic / principle.
- I then break down topics into smaller and more manageable chunks to improve the student's understanding. This often includes methods to help remember concepts and how to tackle problems which may be asked on an exam.
- Next, I will do some practice exam-style questions with the student to help them prepare on how to answer written, multiple-choice, and calculation questions.
- Finally, I like to ask my students similar questions to the start of the session to show the progress which they have made, not only improving their self-confidence in a topic, but also helps to retain key information from the topic.

When students get closer to exams or are ready to do practice papers, I offer sessions in a variety of formats, depending on what would be most beneficial to the student.
In these sessions, we cover exam technique (particularly with how to tackle a paper and dealing with time pressure) and how to deal with being tested on a wider variety of learning objectives than in a normal lesson.
