About me

I think the best way to describe my way of communicating mathematics to people of all ages from primary to adult is to present a reference a colleague of mine wrote for me. He insists on calling me Dr. Hans Gill. I am a retired Post PhD Research Fellow. I was fast tracked into this Fellowship and never completed my PhD.

To whom it may concern,

I am writing in order to recommend Dr. Hans Gill for the position of Senior Research Scientist. Hans was my colleague at Sherpa Management Services Limited in Malta for three months up to January 2017, with whom I collaborated on mathematical research and development.

As a recently graduated astrophysicist from Leiden University, Hans’ experience and mentoring skills really complemented my youthful exuberance and creative ideas. Oftentimes he made me realise that my astronomical ideas could just as easily be applied to other fields of study. He allowed my trains of thought to run freely, wisely directing and nudging them back on track at crucial points, but never imposing his own thoughts. Instead he cherry-picked from my ideas in order to build and develop even further his own processes. This makes Hans not just a great mentor, but an intrepid learner too, ever increasing his abilities from his teammates, notwithstanding their qualifications and standing.

Through his catalytic effect and the symbiotic working relationship that we formed, we co-authored a paper in which we successfully designed an innovative equation to calculate an insurance customer’s risk protection score. This wouldn’t have been possible without Hans’ humorous and genial character, which can make long hours of work seem to flow by, and which led to conversations sprouting outside the scope of work. These in turn sometimes positively led back to work scope, thus leading to an even more fruitful end product. His experiences in life further make him an invaluable mentor and an intriguing personality.

I firmly believe that Hans can nurture any budding great mind like mine, and furthermore, when teamed up with expert engineers who can build Hans’ designs, there’s almost nothing that seems impossible to tackle from a research and development perspective

I’d be happy to answer any further questions.

Best regards,

Darren Buttigieg
